Security System Monitoring

Light all exterior entrances with permanent lighting that cannot be disabled easily.
Light the inside of the building so that someone outside can see someone inside.
Install a fence or hedge around the building. You should be able to see through the fence or over the hedge. Hedges should be prickly or thorny.
Install window locks that cannot be reached easily after breaking the glass.
Install motion sensors to detect motion inside the building.
Install entry protection alarms to detect windows breaking or doors opening.

Set timers to turn on lights when you are not at home. Noise is a great deterrent so consider putting a timer on a radio while you are away.
Stop delivery of mail and newspapers while you are away.
Check who is at the door before opening it.
Don't hide extra keys in obvious places. If you must hide a key, the farther away from the door you hide it, the harder it is to find.
